The Battle of New Orleans was a multi-faceted event in regional and national history. It had all of the following:
- A Glorious American Victory? Yes.
- A horrible human tragedy for the British? Yes
- Happened after the signing of the peace treaty ending the War of 1812? Yes
- A seminal event in race relations in New Orleans and American history? Yes
- Propelled one man to be elected President? Yes
- and more…
The British campaigns in the swamps of now-St. Bernard Parish during the winter of 1814-15 were all of these things. Through our participation in living history events, the Friends of the Battle of New Orleans seeks to educate the public about all these things. We sponsor an annual event to recreate a feeling of what life was like during that period. Our event gathers volunteer living history participants from across the North American continent to bring history back to life. We invite the public and a wide range of school children to participate and learn about these events and their significance.
