SUMMARY:Johnny Appleseed Festival
DESCRIPTION:This is our biggest event of the year! \nAs fall arrives this is the last chance to revive all of your senses\, to create a mental picture that will carry you through the winter. In addition to our regular activities\, we’ll also be making apple cider\, sorghum molasses\, kettle corn and more. \nAs you walk through the pioneer village\, you will notice the Train Depot. You can pass through the depot\, purchase a $2 ticket at the window and wait on the platform for the next train! The conductor will punch your ticket and tour you around the village grounds. Wave as you pass by! \nAfter the train you may smell the Kettle Corn! Buy a bag or two to enjoy or take home for a bedtime snack. \nYou may be hungry by now and want to fill up with a bowl of soup or hot sandwich at the Concession stand located in the Big Red Barn! Eat inside or out at the shelter near the Rotary Office. \nIf you time it right\, you can take your dessert and catch a performance by Johnny Appleseed. He will be hanging out back by the Kinner Log Home. Show times are posted at his tent. \nNow’s the time to keep touring and walk off all that good food! You may have already visited the front of the Village: the Sherry Schoolhouse\, Doc Cameron’s Office\, the Mark Center Post Office\, the Minsel Barbershop\, and the Arthur Telephone Office. Did you pick up a souvenir at the General Store? Outside the store\, the kids can also grind corn and for a small donation\, the resulting corn meal can be taken home. \nThe back of the Village can’t be missed! To the far south end we have two gems. These two structures were built during the Great Depression to house CCC workers. They later housed POW’s (mostly German) in the area. They have been moved to the Village and house our Military collection and our Natural Science collection. The Natural Science building has been recently renovated and climate controlled thanks to the generosity of the Justin Coressel Foundation\, the Moose\, and the VFW Post 3360. Don’t miss the sawmill sawing the timber into boards of various sizes and the Hale Logging Shanty\, the woodshop\, the still and the two story Kinner Log Home. \nMaking your way back up to toward the front you can see demonstrators making Sorghum Molasses and Apple Cider! All are available to take home with a suggested donation. The very front of the Village\, to the south\, houses our Farm Exhibits\, the Diehl Brewery’s Corliss Engine\, and the model railroad museum. \nSaturday 8am – ? Sunday 9am – 4pm

SUMMARY:Hop thru History
DESCRIPTION:Ligonier Valley Historical Society is pleased to again present “Hop Thru History\,” a 21 and older event that will showcase the historical processes of 18th and 19th-century brewing. Historical interpreter Scott Henry will demonstrate brewing methods in early America. Join us on Saturday\, September 10th\, from 11 am to 4 pm for beer\, food\, and more! \nPatriots of the American Revolutionary War refused to purchase or drink beer from “across the pond.” This sudden need for American-made beer created a thriving economy in the Colonies and the newly formed United States. Founding Fathers Patrick Henry\, Thomas Jefferson\, Samuel Adams\, and James Madison vigorously promoted the brewing industry in the colonies. George Washington operated a small brewery at Mount Vernon (his Virginia home). And during the Revolutionary War\, he made sure his troops received a quart of beer each day. Beer has always played a pivotal role in American society\, and it would have been a crucial part of daily life here at Compass Inn as innkeeper Robert Armor would have poured many a mug full of local ale. \n“Hop Thru History” will also focus on the various proclivities of tavern life\, exploring the libations\, music\, and gambling enjoyed by many early Americans. Participate in tavern games such as whist\, the card game most commonly played in taverns\, and a Bingo-style “pub quiz” game. We’ll have beer\, food\, & more hands-on history activities to enjoy throughout the day. \nGeneral admission is $14 for adults\, $12 for adults 62+\, and free to LVHS members or active military members. Tickets can be purchased on-site\, the day of the event. For more information\, please check out our website at compassinn.org/eventcalendar. For any questions\, please contact us at lvhscompassinn@gmail.com or 724-238-4983. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Compass Inn Museum August Living History: Proctor's Independent Battalion
DESCRIPTION:Journey back in time and visit with the soldiers and camp followers of the present-day Proctor’s. They portray the riflemen of the very first American Troops west of the Allegheny Mountains. In the mid-1700s\, the ‘Wild West’ wasn’t as west as one would think. The Laurel Highlands separated the early Pennsylvania colony from the wild frontier. This western border had to be protected from Native and British attacks. Proctor’s\, named after John Proctor\, the Sheriff of Westmoreland County\, was formed and tasked with protecting this frontier border. \nToday\, Proctor’s is brought back to life as the Independent Battalion\, Westmoreland County\, Pennsylvania. This American Revolutionary War Reenactment Unit portrays frontier and military life in Southwestern Pennsylvania during the late 18th Century. Proctor’s will set up camp on Compass Inn Museum’s historic grounds and give demonstrations. Musket and cannon firing demonstrations will be performed daily. \nThe men and women of Proctor’s will depict the lives of camp followers\, midwives\, surgeons\, and leather workers. Camp followers were typically the thousands of wives and girlfriends of soldiers who had to prove their worth to the unit and were subject to military discipline just like the soldiers. Required to be of good character and productive members of the unit\, these camp followers were vital to the function of the army by performing a variety of tasks\, including laundry\, sewing\, tending cattle\, and other odd jobs. \nThe Living History Weekend includes tours of the historic Compass Inn and outbuildings\, as well as cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations\, at no extra charge. \nGeneral admission is $14 for adults\, $12 for seniors (62+)\, $8 for youth (6-18)\, and free for children 5 & younger. Tickets can be purchased on-site on the day of the event. \nEmail lvhscompassinn@gmail.com or call (724) 238-4983 for more information.

SUMMARY:Compass Inn Museum's A Midsummer Night's Ball
DESCRIPTION:As part of the July Living History Weekend at Compass Inn Museum\, located at 1382 Route 30 East\, Laughlintown\, PA 15655\, we cordially invite you to dance the night away under the stars like Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy with local Ligonier Valley dancing master\, Brett Walker\, & period music by The Wayward Companions. Period clothing is encouraged! Event tickets are $40 per person and available by clicking here. Refreshments are included in ticket price. There are no refunds for tickets. Email lvhscompassinn@gmail.com or call (724) 238-4983 for more information. \nBrett Walker – an historic shoemaker by trade – has been doing 18th & 19th century dance since 2002\, including four years as part of the Colonial Williamsburg Dance Ensemble\, where he was trained to be a Dancing Master and became well-versed in the history\, language\, and customs surrounding this form of communal entertainment. Mr. Walker currently lives near the historic town of Ligonier\, PA and has taught period dance classes for Fort Ligonier Museum and Woodville\, the late 18th century home of John & Presley Neville near Pittsburgh. He currently continues teaching classes in Ligonier and Pittsburgh. \nMr. Walker’s approach to dancing is very methodical\, beginning with simple dances and teaching rudiments of the structure\, and gradually adding skills and knowledge to his students. In this way\, a student with little to no experience can feel\, within a relatively short period of time\, competent to dance at a period-style ball. \nThe Wayward Companions is a historical music ensemble with members from diverse backgrounds. They perform the music of the 18th & 19th centuries with a versatility that can take one back to the ballrooms\, parlors\, taverns\, military encampments\, and everyday life in which music played an integral part of both genteel and popular society. The Wayward Companions transport their audiences to times past in a vibrant and engaging way.
