SUMMARY:Colonial brewing with Regimental Brewmeister
DESCRIPTION:Long before the American Revolutionary War\, the British Army in North America learned from the French the importance of spruce beer for treating and preventing scurvy and keeping their soldiers “fit for service.”  John Knox\, an officer in the 43rd Regiment of Foot\, insisted that his troops at Louisburg (1745) be supplied with spruce beer\, “this liquor being thought necessary for the preservation of the health of our men.” When British troops were again involved in a campaign against the French in Nova Scotia in 1757\, their commander\, the Earl of Loudoun\, insisted on an allowance of two quarts of spruce beer per man each day.  General Jeffrey Amherst\, chief of British forces in North America\, insisted that the troops be well supplied with spruce beer\, “for the health and convenience of the troops.” A brewery was set up at the head of Lake George with each regiment donating one man to help with the brewing.  When Amherst’s troops moved north to capture the French Fort Carillon\, subsequently renamed Fort Ticonderoga\, each regiment took with it eight barrels of spruce beer.  Following the British lead\, George Washington quickly adopted the use of spruce beer in order to keep his troops fit for service.  “The following is the Ration of Provisions allowed by the Continental Congress unto each Soldier. …One quart of Spruce Beer per man\, pr diem\,…” \nThe Regimental Brewmeister is my interpretation of what a brewer in HM 43rd would be. It is an amalgamation of Captain Jonathan Gilford from Thomas Fleming’s Liberty Tavern (1976)\, and my portrayal of a Private in HM 43rd Regiment of Foot.  The Regimental Brewmeister presents as a retired British soldier who is now a middle-class journeyman brewer.  I dress well\, and I want to present myself in a manner that shows that while I am not a Gentleman\, I am not a common laborer either. You will find military service has made a distinct impression upon the Regimental Brewmeister\, and he is not apolitical.  Despite his loyalist roots\, he is a stanch supporter of republican ideals but can argue both sides of the conflict. \nThe equipment I use is very basic.  The beer I brew is my own recipe\, derived but not copied from 18th Century sources.  Like brewers of the era\, I do all my work without instrumentation\, relying upon my basic senses of sight\, smell\, hearing\, taste\, and touch to do the work modern brewers have instrumentation like clocks\, scales\, hydrometers\, and thermometers for.  My aim is to recreate the methods\, brews\, and experience of a brewer from 1778 while telling stories of the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Annual Reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield\, in collaboration with the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) of the State of New Jersey\, co-sponsors an annual reenactment of the battlefield. This is an exciting living history weekend celebrating the 248th Anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth. Travel back in time to the American Revolution and the year 1778 where the Continental and British armies are preparing to do battle for the future of our nation. \nGates open at 9:00 AM with activities beginning at 10:00 AM.  A suggested donation of $15.00 per car is requested to help cover the costs associated with the event. \nExperience two full days of military men at arms\, cannons\, cavalry\, civilians and more.  Besides the reenactment and soldier camps\, there will be several talks and historical presentations both in the camps and the Visitor Center. Living historian Stacy Roth will present her acclaimed portrayal of Molly Pitcher.   In addition\, there will be children’s infantry and cannon drills. Sutlers and vendors will have a myriad of wares for you to peruse and buy.  Historical exhibitors from multiple organizations (Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution\, Revolution NJ\, etc.) will be on hand as well.  In case you get hungry\, several food vendors will be on site. \n Handicapped parking is available. Come early for a full day of living history.

SUMMARY:Annual Reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield\, in collaboration with the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) of the State of New Jersey\, co-sponsors an annual reenactment of the battlefield. This is an exciting living history weekend celebrating the 248th Anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth. Travel back in time to the American Revolution and the year 1778 where the Continental and British armies are preparing to do battle for the future of our nation. \nGates open at 9:00 AM with activities beginning at 10:00 AM.  A suggested donation of $15.00 per car is requested to help cover the costs associated with the event. \nExperience two full days of military men at arms\, cannons\, cavalry\, civilians and more.  Besides the reenactment and soldier camps\, there will be several talks and historical presentations both in the camps and the Visitor Center. Living historian Stacy Roth will present her acclaimed portrayal of Molly Pitcher.   In addition\, there will be children’s infantry and cannon drills. Sutlers and vendors will have a myriad of wares for you to peruse and buy.  Historical exhibitors from multiple organizations (Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution\, Revolution NJ\, etc.) will be on hand as well.  In case you get hungry\, several food vendors will be on site. \n Handicapped parking is available. Come early for a full day of living history.

SUMMARY:David Rittenhouse -- Colonial Scientist
DESCRIPTION:We are all familiar with the impact of Enlightenment thinking on the politics of the American Revolutions.  Overtures or Locke and Rousseau are found in debates leading to the Declaration of Independence and the Federalist Papers debating the Constitution.  Thomas Pane forcefully renounces the ideas of hereditary rule (Common Sense) and Patrick Henry literally screams for the ideals of the Enlightenment from his Virginia Statehouse lectern.  America was founded on a platform of refutation of Establishment and support of traditional political power.  At the same time\, and for many of the same reasons\, there is a global revolution in scientific thought during the 18th Century.  Long held beliefs about how the world works\, its origins\, and the nature of natural philosophy were being challenged. \nWe live today in a society that largely accepts modern science but this acceptance of the power of individual investigators to understand how the world works.  This was absolutely NOT the case in 1750!  “Perfect Science” and the authority of the Roman Catholic church dominated how learned people thought about the world.  Stones fell to the earth because\, as Plato argued\, that is where they belong.  Animals never evolve\, they are\, as it was written in Genesis\, made by God.  It’s not really that people believed these things\, but the act of challenging these beliefs was upsetting to the established political order of the world.  People believed what they were told by the accepted authorities (especially the Church) and all experience that conflicted with these accepted beliefs were viewed with extreme suspicion – witness the belief in witchcraft as an explanation for calamity. \nEnlightenment science\, starting in the late 17th Century\, encouraged a focus on direct observation\, inquiry and experimentation.  Things no longer happen because they should happen or because of divine intervention but they happen because of discoverable and understandable natural laws (that may have been authored but not enacted by God).  Furthermore\, since these observations and experimentations are well within the ability and capability of all men\, we have the rise of Men of Letters or Gentlemen Scientist. \nDavid Rittenhouse\, after acquiring significant fortune as a surveyor and international acclaim for the ornery he built for the University of Pennsylvania\, turned his attention to just such direct observation of the heavens. \nA ‘transit’ occurs when a smaller body passes in front of a larger one. A ‘Transit of Venus’ happens when Venus is seen in silhouette against the bright face of the Sun.  Although Venus\, the Earth and the Sun roughly line up every 584 days\, the alignment is not usually precise. Venus’ orbital motion usually takes it ‘above’ or ‘below’ the Sun as seen from Earth (for the same reason\, the Moon does not block out sunlight – causing a solar eclipse – every month). On some rare occasions\, the alignment is close enough that Venus blocks out some of the light from the Sun\, causing a Transit of Venus. \nIn the 18th Century\, transits of Venus presented valuable opportunities to tackle a fundamental problem of the time – finding an accurate value for the distance between Earth and the Sun\, called the ‘Astronomical Unit’ (AU). The English astronomer Edmund Halley postulated that observations of Transits of Venus could be used to determine the distance between the Earth and the Sun by observing and timing a transit from widely spaced latitudes. Small differences in Venus’s track across the Sun (resulting from parallax) could be used to construct triangles with which to estimate the distance from the Earth to the Sun and by extension (Kepler established the relative distances of each planet to the Sun by determining their orbital periods) the distances from the Sun to all known planets (Mercury\, Venus\, Earth\, Mars\, Jupiter\, Saturn\, and George[i]). Unfortunately\, Halley who died in 1742\, was not able to conduct the needed observations but in 1761 and 1769 were observed by teams of scientist from the Royal Society\, including David Rittenhouse\, from many places around the world. James Cook’s observations in Tahiti and Devid Rittenhouse’s in Norristown Pennsylvania in 1769 were the most useful of these observations and established the Sun–Earth distance at 93\,726\,900 English miles[ii]. \nHistoric Rittenhouse Town is not only the first paper mill in America; it is the birthplace of one of the men who first used modern empirical astronomy to establish the size of our solar system.  As Historic Rittenhouse Town celebrates the life and accomplishments of William Rittenhouse\, it is only fitting we also celebrate his grandson\, the first astronomer to observe the Transit of Venus in 1769[iii]\, the first director of the US Mint\, first American to sight Uranus in 1781\, and the first to employ grating diffractors to separate the wavelengths of light (then seen as only colors) in 1785[iv]. \nDuring the June 27\, “Firstival” Event at Rittenhouse Town\, I propose adding a booth for\nDavid Rittenhouse to showcase 18th Century scientific accomplishments. \n[i] Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781 and originally suggested that the new planet be named Georgium Sidus\, or George’s Star in honor of King George III.   This went against the naming convention that had developed in the Western world\, in which planets were named after Roman deities. Several alternative names were tossed around\, including Herschel (after its discoverer) and Neptune. German astronomer Johann Elert Bode\, whose observations helped establish the new object as a planet\, suggested another possibility: Uranus. \n[ii] The radar-based value used today for the astronomical unit is 92\,955\,000 miles (149\,597\,000 km). This is only a difference of eight-tenths of one percent from the value established by Cook and Rittenhouse in 1771. \n[iii] Cook’s observations were will be 5 hours and Greenwich’s observations 19 hours later. \n[iv] These gratings would later be used to create interferometers and spectroscopes used to probe the heavens and determine the atomic content of stars.

SUMMARY:Historical Encampment at the Gathering at Garst
DESCRIPTION:Under the canopy of centuries old oak and sycamore trees\, we have carved out a place where the stories of our country’s past can be heard as clear as the day they happened.  Campfire smoke and music or storytelling wafts through the air and cannon and musket fire occasionally break the peaceful atmosphere in our well-established encampment-which represents the time period panning the Revolutionary War to the Civil War-of nicely stocked shops\, tradesfolk\, Native American lodges\, and camps.  The committee works tirelessly to make our Encampment unique\, organized and enjoyable as possible for both the reenactors and visitors.  A great way to share history with the kids\, grandkids AND grandparents in an exciting way.  We have demonstrations\, kids activities and games\, challenges for adults\, storytellers\, music\, etc.  Last year we had over 70 families/camps participating.  This year we expect to have some special activities to celebrate USA 250! \nAcross the street is our lovely museum and grounds which offers at the same time a “modern” version of the Gathering with vendors\, music\, food\, kids events\, etc.   Darke County has other events over the weekend and we invite you to get a room and stay awhile.  We will keep you busy!

SUMMARY:Colonial brewing with Regimental Brewmeister
DESCRIPTION:Long before the American Revolutionary War\, the British Army in North America learned from the French the importance of spruce beer for treating and preventing scurvy and keeping their soldiers “fit for service.”  John Knox\, an officer in the 43rd Regiment of Foot\, insisted that his troops at Louisburg (1745) be supplied with spruce beer\, “this liquor being thought necessary for the preservation of the health of our men.” When British troops were again involved in a campaign against the French in Nova Scotia in 1757\, their commander\, the Earl of Loudoun\, insisted on an allowance of two quarts of spruce beer per man each day.  General Jeffrey Amherst\, chief of British forces in North America\, insisted that the troops be well supplied with spruce beer\, “for the health and convenience of the troops.” A brewery was set up at the head of Lake George with each regiment donating one man to help with the brewing.  When Amherst’s troops moved north to capture the French Fort Carillon\, subsequently renamed Fort Ticonderoga\, each regiment took with it eight barrels of spruce beer.  Following the British lead\, George Washington quickly adopted the use of spruce beer in order to keep his troops fit for service.  “The following is the Ration of Provisions allowed by the Continental Congress unto each Soldier. …One quart of Spruce Beer per man\, pr diem\,…” \nThe Regimental Brewmeister is my interpretation of what a brewer in HM 43rd would be. It is an amalgamation of Captain Jonathan Gilford from Thomas Fleming’s Liberty Tavern (1976)\, and my portrayal of a Private in HM 43rd Regiment of Foot.  The Regimental Brewmeister presents as a retired British soldier who is now a middle-class journeyman brewer.  I dress well\, and I want to present myself in a manner that shows that while I am not a Gentleman\, I am not a common laborer either. You will find military service has made a distinct impression upon the Regimental Brewmeister\, and he is not apolitical.  Despite his loyalist roots\, he is a stanch supporter of republican ideals but can argue both sides of the conflict. \nThe equipment I use is very basic.  The beer I brew is my own recipe\, derived but not copied from 18th Century sources.  Like brewers of the era\, I do all my work without instrumentation\, relying upon my basic senses of sight\, smell\, hearing\, taste\, and touch to do the work modern brewers have instrumentation like clocks\, scales\, hydrometers\, and thermometers for.  My aim is to recreate the methods\, brews\, and experience of a brewer from 1778 while telling stories of the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Colonial brewing with Regimental Brewmeister
DESCRIPTION:Long before the American Revolutionary War\, the British Army in North America learned from the French the importance of spruce beer for treating and preventing scurvy and keeping their soldiers “fit for service.”  John Knox\, an officer in the 43rd Regiment of Foot\, insisted that his troops at Louisburg (1745) be supplied with spruce beer\, “this liquor being thought necessary for the preservation of the health of our men.” When British troops were again involved in a campaign against the French in Nova Scotia in 1757\, their commander\, the Earl of Loudoun\, insisted on an allowance of two quarts of spruce beer per man each day.  General Jeffrey Amherst\, chief of British forces in North America\, insisted that the troops be well supplied with spruce beer\, “for the health and convenience of the troops.” A brewery was set up at the head of Lake George with each regiment donating one man to help with the brewing.  When Amherst’s troops moved north to capture the French Fort Carillon\, subsequently renamed Fort Ticonderoga\, each regiment took with it eight barrels of spruce beer.  Following the British lead\, George Washington quickly adopted the use of spruce beer in order to keep his troops fit for service.  “The following is the Ration of Provisions allowed by the Continental Congress unto each Soldier. …One quart of Spruce Beer per man\, pr diem\,…” \nThe Regimental Brewmeister is my interpretation of what a brewer in HM 43rd would be. SUMMARY:Talk on Importance of Taverns in Colonial America
DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Taverns in America – The Tavern Act ensured that public houses were constructed along England’s (and her colony’s) major highways and at her ports. This was done principally to support commerce but since these were often the largest and most accessible buildings in many communities\, taverns took a major role in keeping communities together\, sharing news\, and ensuring that the government functioned. Taverns hosted militia musters\, court proceedings\, polls\, and post offices. The tavern was where people gathered to share news and engage in trade. These institutions were far more than just bars and hotels\, they were the heart of many communities\, second only to the church. The Admiral of the Blue Apron discusses how the tavern was instrumental in both preventing anarchy and driving revolution in the American colonies.
