SUMMARY:Grassy Run Heritage Rendezvous
DESCRIPTION:Begun as a commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Grassy Run in 1992\, our event has evolved into an annual demonstration of life during the pre-1840 settlement period of southwest Ohio through living history. Located on the grounds of the Cook Log Cabin Heritage Center\, and Goshen Local Schools High School\, we offer students of local schools\, the home-schooled\, and the public a glimpse into the crafts and skills these pioneers needed to survive in what was then a vast wilderness. Numerous demonstrators of period crafts\, some offering hands-on opportunities\, and vendors of period wares will be present. Period interpreters will talk about their experiences during that time. For those who choose to camp\, wood\, water\, and port-o-lets will be available. Call (513) 675-3934 or email us at GrassyRun@gmail.com for more information on participating and how to register.

SUMMARY:Grassy Run Heritage Rendezvous
DESCRIPTION:The Grassy Run Heritage Rendezvous is the largest living history event in Southwest Ohio and has been for over 30 years. Thanks to the Goshen Township Historical Society we are holding our rendezvous on the grounds of the Cook Log Cabin Heritage Center and\, thanks to Goshen Local Schools\, have the use of the field behind the high school\, which is next to the heritage center\, and both share the same parking lot. The address is 6707 Goshen Road\, Goshen\, Ohio\, 45122.\nThough not juried\, we do require compliance with keeping the feel of a pre-1840 encampment\, both in accoutrements and trade goods. We will have demonstrations in leather working\, rope making\, wood working\, writing with a quill pen\, spinning and weaving\, electricity in the 18th century\, and whatever else anyone would like to offer. Storytellers and musicians will also be in attendance\, along with a native drum circle. \nPlease contact Grassy Run at GrassyRun@gmail.com for more information or a registration form. You can also call Frank Clifton\, our president\, at (513) 520-2882 with questions and follow us on Facebook (GRHAC) for up-to-date information.

SUMMARY:ONSPR - The Gathering
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to come rendezvous with us in the beautiful Piedmont Region of North\nCarolina where Daniel Boone roamed before heading for the Western Frontier. \nIn the mid-1760s\, Boone began to look for a new place to settle. The population was\ngrowing in the Yadkin Valley\, which decreased the amount of game available for hunting. \nBoone had difficulty making ends meet; he was often taken to court for nonpayment of\ndebts. He sold what land he owned to pay off creditors. \nDaniel’s father\, Squire Boone\, died January 2\, 1765\, and his mother\, Sarah\, died in 1777.\nDaniel’s brother Israel died on June 26\, 1756. All are buried in Joppa Cemetery\,\nalong with Daniel’s brother Israel\, in Mocksville\, North Carolina on Highway 601. \nAfter his parents death Boone traveled with a group of men to Florida\, which had become\nBritish territory after the end of the war\, to look into the possibility of settling there. \nAccording to the family\, Boone purchased land in Pensacola\, but Rebecca refused to move\nso far away from friends and family. The Boones instead moved to a more remote area of\nthe Yadkin Valley\, and Boone began to hunt westward into the Blue Ridge Mountains \nAt “The Gathering” we celebrate the spirit of freedom and adventure as did Daniel Boone\nand we operate as a democracy with no one person in charge and any decisions\, ideas or\nrequests made at the Council Fire every evening will be acted upon by camp majority. \nEach night after the Council Fire we will have a night fire to gather around\, socialize\, tell\na tale or two\, make some music and maybe just have some old fashioned fun.

SUMMARY:Compass Inn Museum August Living History: Proctor's Independent Battalion
DESCRIPTION:Journey back in time and visit with the soldiers and camp followers of the present-day Proctor’s. They portray the riflemen of the very first American Troops west of the Allegheny Mountains. In the mid-1700s\, the ‘Wild West’ wasn’t as west as one would think. The Laurel Highlands separated the early Pennsylvania colony from the wild frontier. This western border had to be protected from Native and British attacks. Proctor’s\, named after John Proctor\, the Sheriff of Westmoreland County\, was formed and tasked with protecting this frontier border. \nToday\, Proctor’s is brought back to life as the Independent Battalion\, Westmoreland County\, Pennsylvania. This American Revolutionary War Reenactment Unit portrays frontier and military life in Southwestern Pennsylvania during the late 18th Century. Proctor’s will set up camp on Compass Inn Museum’s historic grounds and give demonstrations. Musket and cannon firing demonstrations will be performed daily. \nThe men and women of Proctor’s will depict the lives of camp followers\, midwives\, surgeons\, and leather workers. Camp followers were typically the thousands of wives and girlfriends of soldiers who had to prove their worth to the unit and were subject to military discipline just like the soldiers. Required to be of good character and productive members of the unit\, these camp followers were vital to the function of the army by performing a variety of tasks\, including laundry\, sewing\, tending cattle\, and other odd jobs. \nThe Living History Weekend includes tours of the historic Compass Inn and outbuildings\, as well as cooking and blacksmithing demonstrations\, at no extra charge. \nGeneral admission is $14 for adults\, $12 for seniors (62+)\, $8 for youth (6-18)\, and free for children 5 & younger. Tickets can be purchased on-site on the day of the event. \nEmail lvhscompassinn@gmail.com or call (724) 238-4983 for more information.

SUMMARY:Compass Inn Museum's A Midsummer Night's Ball
DESCRIPTION:As part of the July Living History Weekend at Compass Inn Museum\, located at 1382 Route 30 East\, Laughlintown\, PA 15655\, we cordially invite you to dance the night away under the stars like Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy with local Ligonier Valley dancing master\, Brett Walker\, & period music by The Wayward Companions. Period clothing is encouraged! Event tickets are $40 per person and available by clicking here. Refreshments are included in ticket price. There are no refunds for tickets. Email lvhscompassinn@gmail.com or call (724) 238-4983 for more information. \nBrett Walker – an historic shoemaker by trade – has been doing 18th & 19th century dance since 2002\, including four years as part of the Colonial Williamsburg Dance Ensemble\, where he was trained to be a Dancing Master and became well-versed in the history\, language\, and customs surrounding this form of communal entertainment. Mr. Walker currently lives near the historic town of Ligonier\, PA and has taught period dance classes for Fort Ligonier Museum and Woodville\, the late 18th century home of John & Presley Neville near Pittsburgh. He currently continues teaching classes in Ligonier and Pittsburgh. \nMr. Walker’s approach to dancing is very methodical\, beginning with simple dances and teaching rudiments of the structure\, and gradually adding skills and knowledge to his students. In this way\, a student with little to no experience can feel\, within a relatively short period of time\, competent to dance at a period-style ball. \nThe Wayward Companions is a historical music ensemble with members from diverse backgrounds. They perform the music of the 18th & 19th centuries with a versatility that can take one back to the ballrooms\, parlors\, taverns\, military encampments\, and everyday life in which music played an integral part of both genteel and popular society. The Wayward Companions transport their audiences to times past in a vibrant and engaging way.

Both armies are soon joined by reinforcements and the shooting becomes almost continuous. Smoke drifts across the field till the armies become like ghosts through the mist. The cannon fires again adding its voice to those of the muskets and rifles. You are drawn in and begin to see a picture of what 18th century warfare was like.

SUMMARY:Grassy Run Heritage Rendezvous
DESCRIPTION:The Grassy Run Heritage Rendezvous is the largest living history event in Southwest Ohio and has been for almost 30 years. Due to Covid restrictions we had to cancel in 2020 and 2021\, but now we are back and have moved to a new location. Thanks to the Goshen Township Historical Society we are holding our rendezvous on the grounds of the Cook Log Cabin Heritage Center and\, thanks to Goshen Local Schools\, have the use of the field behind the high school\, which is next to the heritage center and both share the parking lot. The address is 6707 Goshen Road\, Goshen\, Ohio\, 45122. \nThough not juried we do require compliance with keeping the feel of a pre-1840 encampment\, both in accoutrements and trade goods. We will have demonstrations in leather working\, rope making\, wood working\, writing with a quill pen\, spinning and weaving\, electricity in the 18th century\, and whatever else anyone would like to offer. Storytellers and musicians will also be in attendance\, along with a native drum circle. \nFriday\, April 29\, will be our school day\, with both public and private schools invited\, along with homeschoolers. The hours are from 9 AM to 3 PM. The public will be invited in on Saturday\, April 30\, from 10 AM until 6 PM and on Sunday\, May 1\, from 11 AM until 3 PM. General admission is $5 for adults\, $3 for children 6 to 17 years of age as well as for seniors 65 and older. Children 5 and under and active military with ID are free. \nPlease contact Grassy Run at GrassyRun@gmail.com for more information or a registration form. Call George West at (513) 675-3934 with questions and follow us on Facebook (GRHAC) for up-to-date information.
