SUMMARY:270TH Anniversary Of Braddock's Crossing
DESCRIPTION:The Connellsville Historical Society is in the midst of planning the 22nd” anniversary of our celebration of Braddock’s Crossing of the Yough\, which will be held the weekend of June 27-29th\, 2025. \n  \nOriginally this event was organized as Connellsville’s contribution to the Age of Empire celebrating the United States involvement in the period known as the French and Indian War. This war lasted from 1753 to 1763. Major General Edward Braddock crossed the Youghiogheny River here at Stewart’s Crossing\, now Connellsville on June 29-30th\, 1755. This year will be the 270th Anniversary! 1755-2025 \n  \nOur first reenactment of the crossing occurred on June 29th-30th\, 2005\, the 250th anniversary of the original crossing. General Braddock was on his way to attack and capture the French fort\, Duquesne\, at the Forks of the Ohio River. This 2005 reenactment celebrated Connellsville’s involvement in world history. We have continued this event and added to it over the years. Having an actual river crossing is rather unique among reenactments. \n  \nThis year\, 2025\, we are planning the 4th Dinner-Lecture bringing an acknowledged historian to Connellsville friday evening as the kick-off event of the annual Braddock’s Crossing week-end. The speaker for next year’s event is still in the planning stages. But last year the speaker was Kimberly Hess\, author of A LESSER MORTAL: THE UNEXPECTED LIFE OF SARAH В. COCHRAN. Ms Hess shared stories of this amazing woman\, Sarah B. Cochran\, and her great influence on local history. The event was sold out. \n  \nJune 28th-29th\, will be the 22nd attempt at the reenactment of crossing the Yough\, Some years we are unable to cross due to river conditions. \n  \nThis event reminds us of the important influence our local history has had upon the history of the United States Soldiers were recruited to fight in the Revolutionary War by Colonel William Crawford from the site of our event \n  \nWe are Looking for Reenactors / Living Historians for Braddock’s Crossing\, June 28th to June 29th 2025. This is not a Juried Event. \n  \nYou may come in on Thursday night (June 26th) to set up or come in early Friday/Saturday morning. And stay until Monday.  (June 30th) \nWe will see to it that firewood is available. There is a restroom available in the spring house on our property. We would also like to make public an hourly schedule of events\, as we get closer to the event\, so that something special is happening all day to attract visitors.   \n  \nThe Spring House is outfitted with a private restroom. And modern kitchen amenities. (Fridge\, Stove\, Oven\, Cabinets) The Historical Society will be selling food out of the Spring House during the event. There is also a Comfort Inn hotel\, Valley Dairy\, Melody Motor Lodge\, Dollar Tree\, & Martin’s grocery nearby. \n  \nYou should be in period costume\, if possible\, and if you sell an item or items\, they must be a copy of what would have been available during the time period depicted. Alcohol is not permitted on the grounds. The grounds will be monitored by CPD (Connellsville Police Department) at all hours for the two-day event. \n  \nOffenders will be removed from the property. Camping is allowed only to Participants / Society Members. We will have a live firing event twice both Saturday and sunday.  \nEfforts will be made to keep the area free from those who intrude on re-enactors’ privacy after the publicized time of the event. \n  \nLast year we were able to cross the Youghiogheny for a second year in a row! We are hopeful to do it again depending on River conditions. I will be needing people who are willing to lead the march across the Yough if things go well again this June\, This requires carrying the British flag and leading those who wish to cross the river.  \nFor the river crossing we Have the support of the local swiftwater rescue teams to ensure safety of all participants.  \nThis is a unique experience and sets the Connellsville event apart as different from most other re-enactments. Let us know if you plan on camping out at the site. \nFirewood will be provided. Help us to continue this event. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

SUMMARY:Siege of Fort Wayne 1812
DESCRIPTION:Historic Fort Wayne\, Inc. will host the Siege of Fort Wayne 1812\, June 7 – 8 at The Old Fort in Fort Wayne\, Indiana. From the days of the American Revolutionary War to the end of the 1812 war\, British agents operating from Canada worked to instigate Native American tribes against the United States as part of an effort to block American expansion westward. During the War of 1812\, Indiana Territory was home to several conflicts between the United States territorial government and partisan Native American forces backed by the British. Fort Wayne\, situated on the confluence of the Three Rivers\, was on the front line. This weekend at the Old Fort\, reenactors recreate the Siege of Fort Wayne during the War of 1812. Be a part of the conflict! There will be musket and cannon demonstrations. Soldiers and civilians demonstrate daily life and drills. Period artisans display their wares. There are children’s activities. The event runs Saturday June 7\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm\, and Sunday June 8\, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The event is free. There is no admission fee for the public. Donations are accepted. \n  \n  \nFirst time participants must submit photos of themselves\, members\, and camp. First time vendors and blanket traders must attach photos of the camp and time-period appropriate merchandise. Registration deadline is May 23\, 2025. Check-in begins Friday 12:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Saturday check-in is 6:00 am to 8:00 am.  Parking is available in the lot across the street from the fort. Camp areas and rooms within the fort are assigned. There are restrooms and a water source. There are no food vendors on site. Reenactor Registration forms can be found on the website.

SUMMARY:The Hanna's Town Resolves 250 Event
DESCRIPTION:As we begin the commemoration of America’s 250th birthday\, a special event will take place at Historic Hanna’s Town on Saturday May 17\, 2025\, to honor the 250th anniversary of the Hanna’s Town Resolves\, a bold precursor to the Declaration of Independence. \nNews of the events at Lexington & Concord on April 19\, 1775\, reached the frontier of Western Pennsylvania in mid-May. The residents of Westmoreland County gathered at Hanna’s Town on May 16\, 1775\, to discuss how they should react to these events. They “Resolved unanimously\, that there is no reason to doubt that the same system of tyranny and oppression will (should it meet with success in Massachusetts Bay) be extended to every other part of America: It is therefore become the indispensable duty of every American\, of every man who has any public virtue or love for his country\, or any bowels for posterity\, by every means which God has put in his power\, to resist and oppose the execution of it; that for us we will be ready to oppose it with our lives and fortunes … animated with the love of liberty\, it is no less our duty to maintain and defend our just rights (which\, with sorrow\, we have seen of late wantonly violated in many instances by a wicked Ministry and a corrupted Parliament) and transmit them to our posterity\, for purpose which we do agree and associate together.” \n \nThe Hanna’s Town Resolves were printed in a newspaper in Philadelphia\, but the original document has not been found. We don’t know who signed it\, and we can only imagine the discussion that resulted in this compromise document in which they declared their willingness to fight to protect their rights but stopped short of declaring independence from Great Britain. This May 17\, reenactors will give a plausible recreation of the discussion based on our knowledge of the culture and motivations revealed in other writings of the 18th century residents of Westmoreland County. Special living history demonstrations and displays will also be featured that day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SUMMARY:Post Miami
DESCRIPTION:Historic Fort Wayne\, Inc. will host a Post Miami Event August 24-25. The French were the first Europeans to settle in the Great Lakes region. They arrived in northeast Indiana in the late 1600s. The confluence of the three rivers helped facilitate a lucrative fur trade with the Native American tribes. This weekend at the Old Fort\, the French and British forces will reenact the clash for control of the area. Fur traders\, Native Americans\, soldiers\, and civilians will demonstrate daily activities. There will be musket and cannon demonstrations. Artisans will demonstrate their craft. Merchants will sell their wares. The event runs Saturday August 24\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday August 25\, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The event is free. \nFirst time participants must submit photos of themselves\, members\, and camp. First time vendors and blanket traders must attach photos of the camp and time-period appropriate merchandise. Registration deadline is August 9\, 2024. Check-in begins Friday at 10:00 am. Saturday check-in is 6:00 am to 8:00 am. Vehicles must leave the grounds by 8:00 am Saturday. Parking is available in the lot across the street.
